In my third year of my study I did an autonomous project. I was the client of the project and I wanted to tackle a problem. After some brainstorms I knew that I wanted to focus on stress reduction.
I created the following design question:
"How do I shape stress reduction by changing the mindset of the target group?
I started this design question because I noticed myself, and others in my environment, that today more worries and stress arises among young people. Causes for this can be work and school deadlines, but nowadays social media will also play a major role in this.

I started the project with the idea to get as many insights as possible about stress and stress reduction. After doing some desk research I found out that social media can cause a lot of stress for young people. This sounded very interesting to me and I wanted to dive further into this subject. In addition to doing alot of desk research, I started using several other research methods.
First I conducted many interviews with various target groups (teens, young adults, psychologists and psychologist students) about stress and social media. I did this to gain more insights about the relation between stress and social media. Then I shared a survey with people on social media to gain more insights about the causes of social media stress. To understand my respondents more I participated in an experiment with them. For this experiment we had to remove all social media platforms for a week. After this experiment I interviewed them again about their experiences.
Many insights where gathered and I started to focus more on how to aware young about the dangers of social media. I changed my target group to young people between 12-18 years old because this target group is the least aware of the consequences of social media, and they also spend most of their time on social media.

After clustering all insights, three topics came up very clearly:
Insights showed that it is important for the target group to present themselves in the right way in Social Media. Almost everyone appears to be 'better' on social media and this information causes great pressure young people to participate. Young people are not guided in this. They are on their own because they constantly carry social media with them via their smartphone. From this I started to adjust my design question and I focussed on giving the target group a new awareness which they can put social media better in perspective. I started doing more research on different methods like mindfulness, to gain more information about changing a mindset.
After some brainstorm sessions I came with the idea of an app that would help young people lower their social media use. After testing this app it was clear that this wasn't going to fix the problem.

I started looking at how I can create new awareness among the target group and create behavioral change in a different way. I began talking to parents and schools about what is currently being done about social media literacy. This showed that parents find it difficult to talk about the subject with their own child, and they also think that schools pay too little attention to this subject. Also children between the age of 12-18 years old are forming there own identity, a twelve year old child has a different view than someone who is sixteen years old. So I divided my target group into three different target groups:
With all the information I gathered about social media literacy, I started to make toolkits for parents. These toolkits are available at schools and it will help parents talk openly with their child about this subject. I also created an app wich helps parents control the social media use of their child.
